Gary Takacs is one of the most respected authorities on the business of dentistry. He is an often requested speaker at dental meetings, where he shares his passion for dentistry with Dentists & Team Members. Gary is also the producer of the Thriving Dentist Show podcast.
Gary’s favorite quote:
“Behind every successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.” – Peter F. Drucker (click to tweet!)
It’s the courage that allows a person to get where he is today.
What Gary does for the dental profession:
Gary says his professional life is divided in to two key activities:
- Speaking – varying from a one hour dinner lecture at a dental society, to an all-day course, talking to dentists and team members about how to develop a successful practice.
- Coaching – Gary spends time helping dentists install systems; everything from scheduling to marketing, to consistently attracting new patients.
His difficult time story:
Listen as Gary shares lessons from the experiences he had with his own practice; the difficulties he faced, the goals he set, and how he managed to achieve them.
What he sees as the up and coming thing in dentistry:
The dental implants we have now is amazing. While implants are not new, dentists are able to become more successful with it today because of technology.
A big challenge today is the sheer pace of change. An example being marketing; it’s not just having a website, but also needing to learn about social media, online reviews, etc. He believes that if you want to be successful today, you should learn to embrace all the exciting things that exists out there today. Pick the things that apply to your practice, and successfully apply them to your practice.
The one habit contributing to his success:
Gary learned to be an early riser from his grandmother. He wakes up at 4:30 am every day, and spends some time doing fitness training.
Clinical or Management pearl (tip):
Incorporate digital photography for patient education.
Technology or procedure that is exciting Gary right now:
Smile Reminder/Solutionreach – a patient engagement software service designed to maintain and retain existing patients while identifying and acquiring new patients.
Internet / App resource that Gary feels is awesome:
My Social Practice – a social media for dentists solution.
His book recommendation:
“Everything is Marketing: The Ultimate Strategy for Dental Practice Growth” by Fred Joyal
The book can be purchased here.
Gary’s recommendation for those who are about to start new or restart:
Gary would, in general, dissuade dentists from starting a practice from scratch; unless there is a spousal income, family income etcetera to help them get through the first three years of startup cycle.
What he suggests instead is to find a doctor that is 60+, that is retiring relatively soon, and then figure out how to be his/her successor in the practice.
Get a mentor – find someone that will generously take you under their wing and share with you everything they learned, so that you can come in on their shoulders.
