- Andre is from Philadelphia and studied fine arts and design. After years in high-end retail sales and customer service, his brother-in-law, a local dentist, asked him to help with his practice and he got hooked on dentistry. Andre is the founder of The Systems, a dental practice management, training and consulting firm that created the C.R.E.W. training process and is a contributing creator of the companies Dentalife, Dynamic Dental Systems and HMS and the periodontal protocol Stat-Ck. His presentations have informed and entertained hundreds of audiences across the country while motivating practices to generate better results and creating fluent processes.
In this episode we discuss:
– C.R.E.W
– Inspiring change in those who don’t want to change
– Dentish
What is C.R.E.W.?
Challenge. Reflection. Energy. Win. Those four things, make up everything else that I do, everything that I work with doctors on a regular basis. People typically come to a coach with a challenge. The first thing I ask is about the history of the practice and get them to reflect on that. Then we take that and build a plan, with that energy to move forward and then we measure it and look for a win. I tried to find a way that each of those components would be something measurable. So that challenge needs to be really clear so that we can figure out what it is. Lets figure out how to reflect on that and lets figure out how to build a plan around that and lets measure to see how far we have come.
How do you convince the staff to change, when they dont want to change?
Think about how a staff is made. A staff that a shepherd would carry, is something that was heated and sweated and bent through great pains to get it there so that it wouldn’t snap the wood. Thats the thing, we have a staff. We have teams. We don’t have crews. The problem is that, if you understand the fact that, when we’re a team, and everyone thinks that we are going to achieve more, the mentality is “whats in it for me?” So the doctor goes to a conference at the beach or Disney, well the the team is thinking, “why cant I go?” So there is a lot of pushback there. “You just said that we are a team, but I didn’t get anything out of the conference you attended. Whats in it for me?” The opposite would be to build a crew where I don’t care what you do on your day off, I want to pay you well enough that you can do things on your own and you can go to courses that you want to go to. When we are in our business, we all row at the same pace, based on the idea that we all want to achieve an outcome. We all want to be successful. So that’s when you start building a crew. Teams are just people who like each other and play together.
Can you tell us what your favorite motivational quote is?
“Live full, die empty.” – Les Brown
What is the best advice you have ever received and from whom?
My brother-in-law always said, “Dig deep. Anything you do, dig deep. If you are going to do it, dig deep.”
Can you give us one clinical/Practice management pearl that we can take to our practices on monday?
Just change one word. If we dont call our team a team, and instead call them a crew, or even a cast, whatever we use, just change one word and see how that changes the posture of your patients and your crew. Just change one word and see how it changes things.
Can you give us a app or internet resource that you think is truly awesome?
Texter – Its a small program, that is free. Its a text replacement software. I use it for writing my practice notes. I come up with short cuts. I type in the ADA codes and it will actually replace that with all the progress notes that I would typically write.
What is your one must read book right now?
Delivering Happiness – Tony Hsieh
If you had to start your practice all over again or you are talking to someone who is just about to start their practice, what advice would you recommend?
Go lean and mean. Now its all about amassing as much wealth as you can, while you are spending from your profit and not from your pocket. You should never pay anyone out of your pocket. You can buy the shiny stuff later on, but now is the time to go lean, mean, and understand who you are and work toward that.
