Emily Farrell has been working for Henry Schein as a field sales consultant. She takes care of your dental supplies in your office as a part of her daily job. However, she is more of a consultant rather than a sales person and the courtesy goes to Henry Schein of course.
Emily’s favorite quote:
“If you can’t change your circumstances, change your attitude”
Emily finds this motivating because she believes that everyone at some point gets into a situation that they cannot seem to control or change. So rather than beating yourself up about it, complaining and whining, she sincerely trust that you should change your outlook.
Practice management software discussion outline:
Emily wholeheartedly believes that Practice Management Software is the most important purchase that a dentist can and probably should make when they are starting their practice.
She is most familiar with Dentrix. It is the No. 1 practice management software out there. Excitingly enough Dentrix is running a Beta version due to release soon with its cloud PMS (Practice Management Software)
A very interesting statistics about Dentrix is that only a 10% of its capacity is used at a regular dental office which establishes its immense potential that is yet to be explored by many.
The most important factor in determining the selection of the practice management software:
Two main aspects while considering a software: Ease of use and Compatibility. She has seen offices trying to upgrade their equipment such as digital radiography and so forth but being held back by their Practice Management Software because it is a closed platform. Dentrix is an open platform based software so it easily integrates with pretty much everything that is out there.
Dental offices need to grow and introduce new technology all the time to stay competitive and ensure better service. Dentrix makes such transitions smooth without the need for an IT company or the Software dealer to intervene.
While Dentrix is expensive it is still the most successful out there. New Doctors can settle for “Baby Dentrix” software as she prefers to call it and move to Dentrix with time and necessity. It is called Easy Dental, it won’t do everything that Dentrix does but it definitely is a good start towards the right direction.
What is the most important thing that you tell new Dentists,or to someone making drastic changes to their practices about Practice Management Software?
Practice Management Software in general is much more important than they think it is. They do not come out of a school thinking how to run a business they think about all the clinical work that they do which they are passionate about.
It is a lot harder to run Dental Practices than it was 10 years ago and there are very few Fee for Services Practices left. Insurance companies are taking over and you need to stay profitable which includes running a complex set of reports and keeping records. A good Practice Management software will help you stay focused to your Dental practice through systemic procedures being installed in the way you practice increasing your efficiency and thereby helping you stay in profit.
What Technology in general do you see we have to know about in the coming years that will change Dentistry as you see it?
I think Cad Cam is really going to be something that Dentists will finally have to just choose as part of taking a smart and right business decision. A few of them are around and like Cerec and E4D and they are being accepted quite well in the Dental world.

Emily’s book recommendation:
- The Fred factor – by Mark Sandborn
Something we need to know about your job, could well be a secret, that would make our lives easier as Dentists:
“There is no secret per say, and although it may sound really cliché, the truth is we really care about our customers”
What have you always wanted to tell a Dentists?
Be adaptable to change and do not have blinders on. You might have a very good relationship with your dealer or agent, but you should always be open to learning new things and make an informed decision. To be able to listen with an open mind and perspective is one of the greatest qualities one can have.
