Dr. Marty Jablow is America’s Dental Technology Coach. He is a full time practicing dentist from Woodbridge NJ. Dr. Jablow lectures and writes on selecting and incorporating new technology. Not all new technologies beep and buzz so he also lectures on new restorative materials.
Marty’s favorite quote:
“The possible has been done and the impossible will be done.” – (click to tweet!)
What was impossible 20 years ago is now possible in dentistry.
What Marty does for the dental profession:
Marty is a clinician, speaker and author. He presents and publishes worldwide on many topics, including state of the art dental technology and dental materials. His recurring columns can be found on DrBicuspid.com and Dental-LearningHub.com’s Apex Magazine.
Marty’s difficult time story:
He shares the story about the dental offices’ data backups not working after the hurricane in the East Coast.
Marty says the lesson is that we need to be prepared and have a plan for restoring data should something happen to the dental office because the office data is the life blood of your practice — you can ensure everything in your office, but the data is uninsurable. If you can’t put together the plan, get somebody who will because it’s not difficult to do at all; you just have to take the initiative to get it done.
What is concerning or exciting Marty right now in dentistry:
“Everybody always says ‘Well, the golden age of dentistry was.’ Well, the golden age of dentistry is whenever you are in it. Dentistry affords you a great opportunity to do a whole lot of different things. You don’t know where your career is going to take you – and that’s a major benefit. But some of the downsides here right now are the economics; things like mid-level providers in some states coming in. Dentistry, which is a health care science, but in the US has always been outside of medicine, is kind of getting dragged down in the medical ‘rat hole’. And with that, we are seeing increased cost for education. The dentists coming out of dental school now, their debt ratio are just out of sight.”
“When I look at what we can do now and where it’s going, the integration of Cone Beam 3D Imaging, along with what people now refer to as ‘Digital Dentistry’, digital impression and the ability to put and merge all of these data together, is really going to be where things are heading; where you are literally going to have that hologram in your hand and spin it around and be able to look inside, outside, pick the modality of diagnostic, and it’s all recorded there. So, I think when we are looking at everything from sleep apnea to caries detection, to implant placement, think how far we’ve come and it’s getting better and better, and easier and easier.”
The best advice Marty has ever received:
“Don’t underestimate yourself.”
Every one of us is capable of doing amazing things – both inside of our profession and personally.
The one habit that contributes to Marty success:
Lack of sleep.
Marty says he’s one of those people who don’t sleep a lot and he’s able to do more things.
Management or marketing pearl (tip):
“If you are doing an oral cancer screening, make sure even though you do it, you tell the patient that you did it.”
Technology or procedure that is exciting Marty right now:
“The thing that excites me the most, actually there is no one thing. What it is, is just that whole idea of everyday is going to be different. My best day is tomorrow. That’s it. …There’s people who look at their days ahead of time, and they start to worry – and I never do that. I enjoy what I’m doing, and that in itself is exciting.”
“The other thing that’s exciting me is the new paperless website that I’m developing.”
Internet / App resource that Marty feels is awesome:
TripIt – organizes travel plans into an itinerary that has all of your trip details in one place.
Lexicomp – offers the most trusted and comprehensive mobile drug and clinical information for pharmacists, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Lose It! – Weight Loss Program and Calorie Counter – iOS app for losing weight.

“Atlas of Cone Beam Imaging for Dental Applications” by Dale A. Miles

His recommendation for those who are about to start new or restart:
“I would start with a dental chair, mid-range cost. I would not have an overhead light. I would be using surgical telescopes with illumination. …Save yourself a bunch of money doing that. Handheld xray, Intraoral camera a must, probably because it’s integrated all into one. I’d be looking on Acteon’s Soprolife or Soprocare so that you both have an intraoral camera and caries detection in one. The we start getting into things that you may or may not need, the LED curing light and things that you absolutely have to have some kind of tricherator for your glass ionomers or cements that need to be mixed that way. Those are the basics.
And from there, you start morphing to panoramic units, cone beam units, whether you want digital impressions. I think that’s at a separate level, but if I was going to start… and as I like to say, ‘I can make money doing dentistry anywhere,’ because as long as you have the knowledge, you can do it. Those will be the basics.”
