Bob’s difficult time story:
Bob recalls the story about a 44-year old patient who came in for an examination. The woman kept saying she couldn’t believe her treatment will be $20,000 even though her teeth has not been examined and quoted a price yet. She was worried that it will cost too much. Bob then asked her about her parent’s dental health. He says by asking this question, this will give the dentist an insight into the vision that the patient had for their own dental future. Eventually, the patient agreed and went for the treatment which ended up to be at $34,000.
The lesson Bob wants to share is for the dentists to listen at a level beyond the dentistry, and truly understand what the patient needs.
What is concerning or exciting Bob right now in dentistry:
“Dentistry is undergoing the forces of the free market for the first time in probably forever. Manage care in particular has seen a huge opportunity in lowest cost and standardization. The idea of being a standardized approach that sells low-fee entry and then basically sort of upsells once they get in. But that window, the marketplace is not where you wanna compete; that window going so rapidly is that it’s now showing the public there are different kinds of dentists.
What’s exciting for me right now, is there’s never been a better time to have a high-quality, person-centered, hand-holding transformational practice that’s dedicated to wellness. And doesn’t try to sell dentistry, but help people become healthy, and to achieve the level of health that will support them in whatever their life goal is.”
The best advice Bob has ever received:
Be genuine and authentic. Don’t try to be someone else. You got to be you. And in order to be you, you got to do some inner work and know who you are — what’s important to you and your life.
The one habit that contributes to Bob’s success:
Having discipline. Bob adds that there’s really two laws in life: the Law of Discipline and the Law of Regret — you choose.
Management or marketing pearl (tip):
“You got to love the people that work for you. And then, you love those patients that come to you as best as you can. Some of them are not really lovable, but it doesn’t mean you always like somebody.” “Ask the patient to rate themselves before you even put your hands in your mouth.”
What’s exciting Bob right now in his teachings:
He says he’s most excited about emotional intelligence. Bob defines emotional intelligence as the ability to listen at a level beyond content; to listen to the emotions. “Emotions always tell, but facts simply tell.”

His recommendation for those who are about to start new or restart:
“The first thing I would have them do would be to write a vision of their practice if it were the best it could be for them, as though it’s a greenfield (anything is possible). Put on a good piece of music, preferably with no lyrics, and listen to that and then get yourself in a meditative state, and then just write. And sometimes the easiest way to do this is to imagine you are writing a letter from the future to a dear friend that you haven’t seen for five years. The vision of the practice that you want. It is important because until you are clear with your vision, you don’t know exactly where you’d wanna go.”
